PURPOSE:To obtain a driving method of a high response speed by short- circuiting between a pair of electrode layers for the prescribed time only after stopping a 1st coloring voltage, then impressing a 2nd coloring voltage therebetween. CONSTITUTION:The ITO electrode layer is formed on a glass substrate 1 and grooves are formed between a taking-out part 6a for an upper electrode 6 and the lower electrode layer 2 by photoetching, etc. An oxidation colorable 2nd EC layer 3 consisting of a mixture composed of iridium oxide and tin oxide, a tantalum oxide layer as an in conductive layer 4 and a tungsten oxide layer as a reduction colorable 1st EC layer 5 are then successively formed. Al is deposited by evaporation as the upper electrode layer 6 and one end of Al is brought into contact with the taking-out part 6a. An epoxy resin sealing agent 7 is finally coated thickly on a glass plate 8 for sealing and such plate is stuck to the ECD and is rested to cure the resin 7, by which the ECD is produced.
