PURPOSE:To freely control the output of a text data corresponding to the using method of a printer by a user and to reduce load on a host device, by providing a bracketing flag which brackets the registration of the test data whether it is performed by registering the data as a code or the pattern address of a character generator, when the test data to be inserted in a print page is registered. CONSTITUTION:The host device 1 is connected to the printer 2 via a channel, and a data D such as the text data or a print data, etc., is transferred from the device 1 with a channel command word CCW. In the CCW, a command which indicates whether the data should be processed as the test data or a write data, and a flag which indicates whether the data should be registered as the code or the pattern address after being converted, are included. The data D and the CCW are stored in the intermediate buffer 3 of the printer 2 transiently, and the switching of the data read out following at a control code decision part 4 according to the indication of a command is performed, thereby, the load on the host device 1 can be reduced.
