The subject of the invention relates to a device for monitoring the obligatory wearing of seatbelts in motor vehicles. It consists firstly of the combination of a safety switch 3 actuated by the weight of the occupant of the seat, then an interruptor 1 placed between the lock and the catch of the belt (combination reproduced a second time for the second front seat) and finally of a time-delay relay 5 with an audible and visual signalling means delaying the stopping of the engine after removing the seatbelt or fault in the circuit. It is intended to allow the vehicle to be started only once the driver and his possible front-seat passenger, after having taken their place on their respective seat, have fastened their seatbelt. <IMAGE>
