The invention relates to a device for detecting in an ultra fast manner a breakage of the lifting mechanism and for applying braking with a progressivity rate which is inversely proportional to the load, the assembly being intended to prevent a load from free falling without damaging the winch. It consists of a braking disc 1 on a drum, hydraulic clamps 2, a motor-driven pump 3, a protection switch box 4, a modular block for hydraulic distribution 5, a pressure sensor 6, a load sensor 7, voltage generators with magneto-resistive sensors MRS 8 and 9 and an electronic rack 10 having detection and control functions. It is provided with a memory and with an automatic simulation system. The device according to the invention is particularly intended for critical sites such as nuclear power stations, nuclear fuel processing plants, metallurgical complexes, chemical industries, arsenals and harbour installations. <IMAGE>
