A device for damping rotary motions consists of the combination of a friction element 1 and a spring 2 which presses the latter against a friction surface 5 of one of the machine parts 3, 4. Tongues 6 are cut out of the sheet-metal material of the spring 2 and bent well out of the plane 11 of the sheet. They engage in V-shaped recesses 9 in the friction element 1. In the event of rotation of the machine parts 3, 4 relative to one another in one direction of rotation, the slope of the tongues 6 is increased and the frictional force and hence the damping is increased as a result. In the other direction of rotation, the slope of the tongues 6 is reduced and results in a reduced frictional force or damping of the rotary motion. <IMAGE>
