摘要 PURPOSE:To continue an efficient electrolytic reaction for a long period by previously washing a cathode with an aq. nitric acid soln. to conveniently restore the activity of the cathode at the time of electrolytically reducing m- hydroxybenzoic acid in an aq. acidic soln. CONSTITUTION:m-Hydroxybenzoic acid is electrolytically reduced in an aq. acidic soln. to obtain m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. In this case, when electrolysis is industrially carried out for a long period, the activity of the cathode is deteriorated, and the efficiency is decreased. Accordingly, when the cathode is deactivated, an aq. nitric acid soln. is charged into the cathode chamber, and the soln. is agitated to wash the cathode for a specified time. By this method, the cathode can be activated without being taken out from an electrolytic cell, and efficient operation can be carried out for a long period.
