PURPOSE:To simply manufacture a steel wire for a non-heattreated high strength spring by hot rolling a steel billet having a specified compsn. and by hardening the resulting steel wire to form a martensite structure or by further cold working and bluing the steel wire. CONSTITUTION:A hot steel billet contg., by weight, 0.15-0.35% C, 1.0-3.0% Si, 0.3-3.0% Mn and 0.5-5.0% Cr is hot rolled and the resulting steel wire is hardened by immediate forced cooling to form a martensite structure. The hardened steel wire may be cold rolled or further is blued at a proper temp. A steel wire for a high strength spring having higher strength than a conventional one, little unevenness, high drawing ratio and superior settling resistance can be manufactured at a low cost.
