The object of the invention is to provide a gripper in which the lifting of a workpiece automatically follows the gripping of a workpiece and the release of the workpiece immediately follows the setting-down of the workpiece. The gripper has two tong elements 6 and 7 which are pivotably mounted on a first guide block 1 and have oppositely inclined guides 9 and 10 in which engage guide elements 12 and 13 which are arranged at a fixed distance on a second guide block 15. The first and second guide blocks 1, 15 are mounted, so as to be displaceable towards one another, on guide rods 16, 17 arranged in parallel on a third guide block 19. As areas of application, mention can be made of machine tools in mechanical manufacture, for example automatic machines in series manufacture. <IMAGE>
