1,159,506. Preparing N-demethyl alkaloids; demetbylajmaline. ROUSSEL-UCLAF. 24 Nov., 1966 [25 Nov., 1965; 19 Jan., 1966], No. 52745/66. Heading C2C. N-demethyl alkaloids, especially demethylajmaline, are prepared by subjecting an alkaloid having an N-methylhydroindole group to the action of a culture of a micro-organism of the genus Streptomyces, The novel compound demethylajmaline is prepared by this method and can then be converted, e.g. to the tartrate or hydrochloride. Specific micro-organisms referred to are S. Griseus, S. Levandulae, S. Rimosus, S. Chattanoogensis, S. Platensis and S. Roseochromogenes. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise as active ingredient N-demethylajmaline or a non-toxic acid addition salt thereof and a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient. The compounds may be used via the pectoral, transcutaneous or rectal route and may be in the form of injectable solutions or suspensions, tablets, coated tablets or suppositories. The compounds are stated to have a regulating effect on the cardiac rhythm.
