Adjustable motor vehicle shock absorbers are provided with a cylinder (1) containing damping fluid, an axially displaceable piston rod (2) immersing therein and forming a seal, and a damping piston (3) fixed thereto, which divides the cylinder space into two working chamber halves (4, 5) with alternating high and low pressure and is provided with fluid passage ducts (DI, ZI) generating damping force. Their effective cross section can be varied by throttle elements (14), pressurisable from the high pressure working chamber half and adjustable thereby against spring action, which are displaceably supported in a pressurisation chamber (13) hydraulically pressurising them also from the rear, which is hydraulically connected to both working chamber halves (4, 5), a solenoid control valve (17, 18) adjusting the effective cross section of the relief line (16) leading to the low pressure working chamber half being inserted into the said line. In order to arrive at an improved damper characteristic and piston design, the throttle elements each comprise a cylindrical throttle piston (14) projecting into the associated fluid passage duct (DI, ZI) and a helical compression spring (15) acting on it from the rear, these being accommodated in a common cylindrical throttle piston bow (13) forming the pressurisation chamber. <IMAGE>
