<p>Apparatus and method for use in determining information relating to the plane of rotation of an object, particularly a vehicle wheel (240). The apparatus includes a probe (20) that is maintained at the same contact point relative to the wheel (240) during the rotation of the wheel (240). The position of the probe (20) is monitored and position-related data is analyzed by a processing system. The processing system implements a least squares method for defining the plane of rotation. In one embodiment, the probe (20) is connected to a pivotable wobble plate (130). A carriage assembly (14, 18) also acts to maintain the predetermined position of the probe (20). In another embodiment, rotatable arms (204, 206) and counter-weights (220, 228) are employed so that the probe (20) moves as a direct result of rotation of the wheel (240).</p> |
