To test the tensile strength of an apertured linking element such as a shackle (10) comprising a U-shaped member (12) having a removable pin (14) extending between the free ends (16) of the arms (18) thereof, extendable means are located between the arms (18) of the U-shaped member in engagement with the pin (14) and base (20) of the U-shaped member. The extendable means are then extended to push the pin and the base of the U-shaped member apart relative to one another. The extendable means may comprise two beams (24, 42) arranged in contact with the pin (14) and base (20) respectively and hydraulically operable piston and cylinder arrangements (34) disposed between the beams for pushing the beams apart relative to one another. |
