PURPOSE:To obtain a high-quality, high-MW aromatic polycarbonate industrially in good efficiency, by self-condensing a bisalkyl carbonate of an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of a specified catalyst in the absence of any reaction inhibiting substance. CONSTITUTION:A bisalkyl carbonate of an aromatic dihydroxy compound of the formula (wherein R<1-2> are each a 1- 6 C alkyl or a cycloalkyl, and Ar is a bivalent aromatic group) is self-condensed at 20-350 deg.C for several min to several tens of hr in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from among the Group IIB, IIIBS, IVA and IVB metallic elements of the periodic table and their compounds (e.g., dibutyltin oxide) in the substantial absence (e.g., at most 5mol%, based on the aromatic skeleton units of the aromatic polycarbonate) of an aromatic dihydroxy compound as a reaction inhibiting substance while, if required, the formed dialkyl carbonate is being removed from the reaction system. In this way, a high-MW aromatic polycarbonate of a weight-average MW of 6,000-100,000 can be obtained.
