The optical recording medium, which can record information which can be subsequently erased, is produced by thermally sintering a mixture of TeO2, a reducing agent (such as Al, Si, Ti etc.) and, optionally, an erasability-enhancing additive so as to cause reduction of the TeO2, optionally pulverising the product and pressing and forming the pulverised product, and producting an optical recording layer by vacuum deposition of the sintered product or the formed product made therefrom. <??>The method avoids difficulties associated with spilling of the source due to sudden reaction during vacuum deposition, and since dissociation of the tellurium proceeds gradually at a constant speed, there is little deviation of chemical composition throughout the film thickness. Moreover, since a large quantity of source can be prepared at a time and necessary portions can be taken therefrom for use, the reproducibility can be far better than in conventional methods, and films of identical characteristics may be obtained. |
