A method of masking part of an article 10 during an electrostatic-deposition coating process to prevent electrostatically charged particles from being applied to said part of the article consists in providing an earthed masking member 14 having parts spaced from parts of the article 10 by gaps 18, 19. Electrostatically charged particles are prevented from penetrating the gaps 18, 19 during the coating process by a Faraday cage effect. For a disc shaped article 10 having an outer flange 12 and a central opening 13 two concentric annular members 15, 16 are spaced from the flange 12 and the periphery of the central opening. This arrangement shields the underside of the disc from coating particles, and prevents build up of a coating bridge between the article and the mask. <IMAGE> |
