PURPOSE:To reduce the cost of a titled reader by segmenting plural words within a scanning range by means of a word segmenting means. CONSTITUTION:The user of an OCR places a portable unit 24 in the position of a unit price which is expected to a business form 1. The quantization image signals of the whole scanning area are stored in an image buffer 9 by main scanning and auxiliary scanning. A word segmenting circuit 25 controls a word segmenting circuit 10 and segments the words from image signals stored in the image buffer 9. The image signals of the characters which are segmented in one character unit are supplied to a character recognition part 11, turned into character codes after the characters are recognized, and are outputted outside from an output terminal. The recognition action is executed on the whole of one word, and a series of action is executed on next word. Thus, respective words are segmented among plural words within the scanning range, and specified words can be segmented if the size of the scanning range is optionally decided, whereby the cost of reader is reduced, and it can be easily used.
