PURPOSE:To realize a high accuracy in positioning a carriage and realize high- quality printing, by providing a controller comprising an acceleration data string and a speed-reducing data string for controlling a stepping motor, and restricting the energization time for the N-th pulse from the final pulse in the speed-reducing data string. CONSTITUTION:Speed-reducing numerical data TbN is so set that 3/16 TC<=TbN<=4/16Tc, where Tc is the resonance period in a rectilinear motion of a carriage 6 before stoppage of the carriage, and N is the minimum integer exceeding a pulse angle value NC for a stepping motor 1 corresponding to the total backlash in a gearing mechanism comprising a gear 2 and a gear 3a. When a controller 7 makes switching to the final excitation phase, a torque generated by the motor 1 can be transmitted to the carriage 6, so that the carriage 6 can be fed forward by a minute amount against a frictional load, and can be securely stopped at an end part in a direction opposite to the feeding direction. Thus, high position accuracy and high reproduction accuracy can be realized.
