PURPOSE:To enable increase of a belt life to a limit, by a method wherein a radius when a moment total sum of the internal stress of an endless metallic belt on which a residual stress is exerted is reduced to zero is set so that maximum surface stresses on the inner and the outer periphery side of a ring exerted during operation are made approximately equal to each other. CONSTITUTION:A radius when the internal stress of an endless metallic belt 6 is set such that a residual stress is applied so that maximum surface stresses on the inner and the outer periphery side of a ring, being applied on the endless metallic belt 6 during operation, are made approximately equal to each other. The residual stress can be exerted by a known method, e.g. a method wherein the endless metallic belt 6 is stretched around two tension rollers which are rotated in a state to press a relatively small bending roller. This constitution prevents unilateral rupture of the endless metallic band 6 from the inner or the outer periphery side of the ring due to metal fatigue, and enables increase of the life of a power transmission belt 5 for a continuously variable transmission to a limit.
