PURPOSE:To manufacture a steel material for a chain having high strength, high toughness and a low yield ratio by adding specified percentages of C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Ni, sol.Al and N to Fe. CONSTITUTION:A steel material having a compsn. consisting of, by weight, <=0.35% C, 0.05-0.50% Si, 0.50-2.50% Mn, <=0.040% P, 0.040% S, <=5.00% Cr [8.5XC(%)+Cr(%)>=2.85%], 0.50-3.0% Ni, 0.010-0.060% sol.Al, 0.003-0.020% N and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is manufactured. The steel material for a chain having >=about 90kgf/mm<2> tensile strength, superior toughness at low temp. and <=about 92% yield ratio is obtd. at a low cost.
