PURPOSE:To efficiently produce high-purity metal Li with high efficiency by mixing Li2CO3 and carbonaceous reducing agent having caking properties and calcining the mixture, then subjecting the mixture to thermal decomposition and reduction by heating under a reduced pressure and dissolving the generated metal Li vapor to a molten metal. CONSTITUTION:The Li2CO3 and the carbonaceous reducing agent having caking properties such as pitch coke are uniformly mixed. The mixture is calcined at 300-500 deg.C. After the calcined matter is crushed to about 10-30mm, the crushed matter is heated to 800-1,300 deg.C, more preferably 950-1,100 deg.C at about <=30mmHg reduced pressure, by which the Li2CO3 in the calcined matter is decomposed to Li2O. Impurity elements such as Na and K are reduced and evaporated. The thermally decomposed matter is then reduced by heating to 1,500-1,650 deg.C, more preferably 1,500-1,600 deg.C under about >=20mmHg reduced pressure. The gaseous mixture composed of the metal Li vapor and gaseous CO generated at this time is injected at a high speed and is bombarded to the molten metal of a low m.p. such as Sn, Al or Pb to dissolve the metal Li. The molten metal is thereafter distilled at 800-1,000 deg.C, by which the metal Li is obtd.
