PURPOSE:To provide such a copying material with which characters or designs copied thereon are removed by addition of water, by supporting a water-soluble aliphatic hydrocarbon sulfate as a white solid matter on a support. CONSTITUTION:A white powder of a water-soluble aliphatic hydrocarbon sulfate is dissolved in a solvent to prepare a solution. The water-soluble sulfate is preferably a higher alkyl sulfate such as lauryl sulfate, myristyl sulfate, cetyl sulfate and stearyl sulfate. Next, a support formed of a porous material such as paper, cloth, hygroscopic rubber and hygroscopic plastic sheet or film is impregnated with the solution, and the solvent component is evaporated off, whereby the sulfate is deposited as a white solid matter. Thus, a copying material comprising the aliphatic hydrocarbon sulfate fixed on the support in a layer form is obtained.
