PURPOSE:To determine the state of deterioration by forecasting a possible dielectric breakdown, by arranging a sheet-shaped AE sensor outside a cable to detect AE associated with a partial discharge by the AE sensor, facilitating the detection of a partial discharge. CONSTITUTION:A sheet-shaped AE sensor 30 is arranged outside of cable 20 and AE generated associated with a partial discharge is detected with the AE sensor 30. In other words, when a partial discharge is caused within the cable 20, an AE wave propagates through the cable in all directions. The AE wave is detected with the AE sensor 30, amplified with a preamplifier 38 and the intensity thereof, the number of counting thereof within a fixed time and the like are recorded with an AE monitor 30. The division arrangement of the AE sensor 30 enables the specifying of the position at which a partial discharge occurs thereby facilitating the detection of a partial discharge.
