PURPOSE:To prevent a retrieval mark from being misdetected and to perform information retrieval by moving a film breadthwise and detecting retrieval marks provided to sides of frames, and detecting plural frames while making the quantity of lighting uniform when deciding plural breadthwise frames. CONSTITUTION:Light from an exposure lamp 22 is controlled by a condenser lens 36 to illuminate the film F. An image of the film F is enlarged by a projection module 37, reflected by mirrors 38a-38e, and projected on a screen 1 in reader mode or recorded on recording paper P on a copying mechanism 68 in print mode. At this time, the film F is moved breadthwise so as to decide whether or not there are plural frames in the width direction of the film F, and a sensor detects retrieval marks provided to sides of the frames of the film F to decide the number of the frames. At this time, the quantity of light of the movement range of retrieval marks is made uniform and the lighting area is expanded. Thus, the lighting area is expanded with the uniform quantity of lighting, so no retrieval mark exists from the lighting area, misdetection is eliminated, and information retrieval is performed correctly.
