PURPOSE:To reduce a decrease in lighting on a screen by varying an area where retrieval marks are lighted and varying the quantity of lighting according to the lighting area when detecting retrieval marks provided to sides of frames of a film. CONSTITUTION:Light from an exposure lamp 22 is controlled by a condenser lens 36 to illuminate the film F. An image of the film F is enlarged by a projection module 3, reflected by mirrors 38a-38e, and projected on the screen 1 in reader mode or recorded on recording paper P on a copying mechanism 68. At this time, the film F is moved breadthwise so as to decide whether or not there are plural frames in the width direction of the film F; and a sensor detects the retrieval marks provided to the sides of the frames of the frame F to decide the number of the frames. At this time, the lighting area is expanded so that no retrieval mark exits from the lighting area, and the quantity of lighting is increased corresponding to the area. Thus, the quantity of lighting is varied according to variation of the lighting area to eliminate a decrease in the illuminance on the screen, thereby making a projection image easy to see.
