PURPOSE:To store much more capacity of pictures by taking a difference between adjacent picture elements so as to reduce the quantity of data in a way of the differential compression processing and applying plural number of times of such processing to an original picture data so as to improve the compression rate. CONSTITUTION:A picture data sent from a picture generating section 1 is fetched in a picture file device 5 via a main memory 2. The device 5 has a CPU 6 and a storage disk 9, and the CPU 6 has a picture compression means 7 and a picture expanding means 8. Then the means 7 takes a difference between adjacent picture elements so as to reduce the quantity of data as the differential compression processing and applies the compression processing to the original picture data transferred from the main memory 2 for plural number of times, thereby generating a multiplex difference compression data, which is sent to a disk 9. The multiplex differential compression data stored in the disk 9 is read as required, expanded by the picture expanding means 8, sent to a display section 4 via the memory 2 and the processing section 3 and visualized. The compression rate is improved in this way to store much more pictures.
