The single turn saddle coil consists of two parallel conductive segments (21a, 22a), each having a capacitor (23a) connected in series with it. The ends of the conductors are connected to diametrically opposed points on a pair of parallel conductive loops (25a, 26a), spaced apart along a longitudinal axis (16). The coil may be driven by a source such as a RF amplifer (20) between the terminals (27a, 28a) in parallel with the capacitor in the first segment (21a). A radio frequency magnetic field (B) is poroproduced perpendicular to the plane defined by the conductive segments. The complete NMR coil includes a number of such segments evenly spaced around upper and lower conductive circular loops.
