PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high coercive force by introducing gaseous CO or CO2 into a vacuum system when a ferromagnetic metal is diagonally vapor-deposited so as to form moderately oxidized films on the surfaces of vapor-deposited particles. CONSTITUTION:When Co, Ni or the like is diagonally vapor-deposited on a polyester film base or the like in a vacuum system, gaseous CO or CO2 is introduced under about 10<-4>-10<-5>Torr partial pressure so as to form very thin metallic oxide films on the surfaces of particles of the magnetic metal. Thus, a magnetic layer having higher coercive force than a magnetic layer formed in a gaseous O2 or N2 atmosphere is formed, and the coercive force of the resulting tape can be increased by several times that of a conventional tape. |
