PURPOSE:To accelerate the processing of an image by fetching the data equivalent to one picture and simultaneously calculating the density histogram of that. CONSTITUTION:A density histogram calculation circuit 11 is connected in paral lel with a picture memory 3 connected with the output side of a picture input circuit 2 and a threshold level as the calculation result is outputted to the pic ture memory 3. The density histogram calculation circuit 11 is driven by a computer 9 and of which counter number is the same as the variable density width of a multivalued picture. Then, it's counter is cleared when the A/D conversion of the video signal of one picture is started. When the density of a picture element is (n), the n-th counter is counted up.
