PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a perfume component in high yield without forming polymers, by reacting limonene with hydrogen sulfide gas in the presence of an inorganic Lewis acid catalyst at low temperature. CONSTITUTION:Hydrogen sulfide gas is added to limonene in an inert organic solvent such as methylene chloride, chloroform, etc., in the presence of an inorganic Lewis acid catalyst (e.g. aluminum chloride or boron fluoride) to give the aimed substance. The reaction is carried out at <=5 deg.C for 2-10hr, preferably -40--80 deg.C 2-5hr. The amount of the Lewis acid used is 0.05-0.2 equivalent based on limonene and the amount of hydrogen sulfide is 1-10mol., preferably 2-5mol. based on 1mol. limonene.
