PURPOSE:To make it possible to form a polycarbonate copolymer of a low stress optical coefficient without detriment to the excellent properties, such as transparency, surface hardness, heat resistance and mechanical properties, of a polycarbonate, by introducing a styrene oligomer as a graft component or a terminal group into the main chain of a polymer. CONSTITUTION:A polycarbonate copolymer is formed by polycondensing a prepolymer obtained by reacting a styrene resin macromonomer with a polycarbonate oligomer with an aromatic dihydroxy compound. Said styrene macromonomer is one formed by polymerizing a styrene monomer to a degree of polymerization of about 10-100 and having a functional group (e.g., -COOH, -OH or -NH2) which can be acylated by the Schotten-Baumann reaction on either terminal. As said polycarbonate oligomer, one having a degree of polymerization of about 2-50 and a terminal chloroformate group content >=about 65% can be used. As said dihydroxy compound, bisphenol A can be used most desirably.
