Apparatus on tidal rivers for protection against high storm waters

On tidal rivers, installations in the form of barriers (7) arranged at distances from one another and extending essentially transversely to the direction of flow are proposed for protection against high storm waters. The barriers (7) consist of weir-like carriers (8) which are mounted on supports (9) and the lower edge of which is located above the frequently recurring water levels (5) and the upper edge of which is located in proximity to the highest known high-water level (6). These barriers, of which the number and position in the stream are to be determined after tests, are engineering structures which the flow can pass under and over and also round sideways. They are capable of reducing the flow speed of a storm-water wave and of lowering the crest height of the storm-water wave, without interfering with the ecological equilibrium of the course of the river and of its bank zones. <IMAGE>
