In the laundry dryer, in the drying space of which temperature and moisture sensors are installed, and which has a calculating mechanism for determining the remaining time as well as a timing mechanism which controls the drying process, and a display device for representing the remaining time, a fictitious empirical value for the drying duration is displayed at the beginning. During the heating phase in a first time interval ( DELTA t1), the remaining time is determined, by calculating from the temperature gradient and calculating values for the laundry type and the desired degree of drying, and displayed; during a short back-cooling phase in the second time interval ( DELTA t2), the remaining time is again calculated, but taking into consideration the now negative temperature gradient, and displayed. In the further time intervals with further heating, the laundry moistness is used as control criterion, as long as this quantity is still utilisable. In these intervals, the determination and display of the remaining time depends exclusively upon the laundry type set and the desired degree of drying. When a lower moistness than "iron-damp" is reached, the remaining drying process is controlled purely temporally. The remaining time can be determined by extrapolation, taking into account the previously measured and calculated values for the temperature gradient or the moistness gradient, for the operating points (6 and 7) "slightly moist" or "dry" and the corrected value can be displayed. <IMAGE>
