A portable code generator 2 (Fig. 1) for feeding data to digital computers &c., comprises a loud-speaker 5 or other acoustic signal source controlled by a dial 3a, by a keyboard, punched tape or some other operating device. In use the generator 2, or at least the acoustic signal source, is fitted in self-holding manner to a telephone mouthpiece 21. In use, the operating device produces a signal train containing a digitally coded message. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) an oscillatory circuit, comprising a capacitor 7 and coil 8 in parallel, is connected to the emitter of a transistor 6, the base of which is connected to a constant bias voltage. The coil 8 is inductively coupled to a further coil 9 whereby current variations caused by the collector current induce in-phase voltages in the coil 8 and undamped oscillations occur. A contact 10 closes and opens rhythmically when the dial 3a is released, to connect a battery 4 intermittently to the oscillator circuit. A pulse train is thereby produced. Alternatively, an oscillator 20 (Fig. 3) is capable of producing two frequencies. A battery switch 16 is closed when the dial 3a is in use. A contact 101 intermittently connects in a capacitor 17 on release of the dial 3a whereby frequencies are generated alternately by oscillatory circuits 7, 8 and 7, 8, 17. A third embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) uses three oscillators (12, 13, 14) of frequencies f 1 , f 2 , f 3 . When the dial (3a) is released pulses at frequency f 1 alternate with "intervals " at frequency f 2 . When the dial (3a) returns to its normal position the signals at frequencies f 1 and f 2 cease. End of transmission is indicated by pressing a key (20), thereby signalling the frequency f 3 . Alternatively, end of transmission may be indicated by a multi-digit code number. Where the data input is provided by punched tape, this is prepared by an auxiliary device. The tape is pulled through the code generator by a drive mechanism (not shown). The dial may have interchangeable cam-plates having different relationships between the width of the raised portions and the width of the " dwells " of the cam-plates. A secret combination of digits may switch on the computer. The loudspeaker may be in a small housing for fitting to the telephone mouthpiece while the remaining parts of the generator are in a second housing for placing on a table top.
