PURPOSE:To miniaturize the pickup of a magneto-optical recorder and make it light and to accelerate access, by providing a grating coupler, a mode light separating means, and an optical detector which receives and detects both mode light, TE and TM, on one waveguide substrate. CONSTITUTION:The waveguide path substrate 25 is formed by providing an aperture part 27a for transmitting a laser beam on an opaque substrate 27 made of an Si, and it is positioned underneath the aperture part 27a, and a collimator lens 24 and a semiconductor laser 23 are arranged. Also, on the surface of the substrate 27, a transparent waveguide layer 29 with a refractive index higher than that of a buffer layer 28 formed with an SiO2 is provided via the layer, and on the surface of the layer, the grating coupler 30 responded to the aperture part 27a and also used as the separating means is formed. Next, magneto-optical disks 22 provided with electromagnets 21 to impress bias on a rear plane side at the time of recording or erasing a data are confronted on the coupler via an objective lens 26 for condensing, and on the surface of the substrate 27, TE-TM mode splitters 34a and 34b that are the mode light detecting means and the optical detectors 32a-32d of pin photodiodes which detect those outputs of the splitters are provided.
