A tension member (1), which can be used as an anchor element in foundation engineering or mining or as a reinforcing element for concrete and also as a prestressing member for prestressed concrete, is composed of a core (2) comprising unidirectional fibres embedded in a synthetic-resin adhesive, and of a sheathing (3) consisting of a material, the expansibility of which is greater than that of the fibres and which can deform plastically in the event of overloading. In the case of a tension member which is brittle per se and consists of a fibrous composite material, this sheathing results, in the surface zone, in a deformation compensation between the tension member and the anchoring region, in the case of which loading peaks are reduced by plastifying, comparable to the creep of steel. On the surface of this sheathing (3) there may be provided a profiling, e.g. comprising a coarse thread (4), which forms force-transmitting ribs. <IMAGE>
