The invention relates to an acoustic damping detector for nondestructive material tests, especially for detecting hidden damage, for example crack formation, corrosion, water inclusions, bonding faults or removal or alteration of the material. The instrument is particularly suitable for structures made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastics and for composites, but also for building-material tests. The instrument is substantially lighter and more manageable and its circuitry is substantially simpler than in the case of earlier solutions. This is achieved by generating the alternating voltage needed to energise the transmitter in a controlled selective amplifier with feedback.
