PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform polymerization with a higher catalyst activity without detriment to the stereoregularity of the obtained polymer, by polymerizing an alpha-olefin by using a catalyst formed by contacting a highly active solid titanium catalyst component with other catalyst components in an inert medium in the absence of any alpha-olefin. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin is polymerized by using a catalyst formed by contacting a highly active solid titanium catalyst component (A) essentially consisting of magnesium, titanium, a halogen and an electron donor with a catalyst component of an organometallic compound (B) of a Group I-III metal of the periodic table, an organohalogen compound catalyst component (C) and a catalyst component (D) of an organosilicon compound or an amine of a high steric hindrance in an inert medium in the absence of any alpha-olefin. Examples of component (C) include organohalogen compounds comprising a 1-20C hydrocarbon group and a halogen group such as chlorine, bromine, iodine or fluorine.
