A slide caliper has a sleeve (10) which is elongate along a longitudinal axis (26) and is provided with a first bearing surface (23, 23a) of a measuring jaw (20) on one of its ends. A measurement cylinder (30) can be displaced in the sleeve (10) in the direction of the longitudinal axis (26) and is provided with a second bearing surface. The bearing surfaces (23, 23a) are directed towards each other and have a component whose direction is radial with respect to the longitudinal axis (26). They are capable of enclosing an item under test. In order to rule out errors in measurement of the Abbe type and to make available a simple measurement tool which can quickly be brought into a measurement position, the longitudinal axis (26) runs through the bearing surfaces (23, 23a) (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
