The invention relates to a towing device which operates automatically, is intended for motor vehicles and has a removable ball-ended rod. A pin, which under spring loading can move upwards and downwards in vertical grooves, is pretensioned by a lever and on insertion of the ball-ended rod is brought, by the lever being released, into a locking position in which it latches into a groove on the ball-ended rod.
