PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory display contrast by allowing substrates, where a black resin is provided between transparent electrodes, to face each other. CONSTITUTION:A resist 3 is formed into a desired shape on a substrate 1, and excess transparent electrodes 2 where the resist 3 is not formed are eliminated by etching to pattern transparent electrodes 2. A black resin 4 is coated on this substrate and the resist 3 is peeled, and then, the black resin 4 coated on the resist 3 is eliminated but the black resin 4 between transparent electrodes remains. The substrate 1 on which the black resin 4 is formed in gaps between transparent electrodes is obtained in this manner. Two substrates 11 and 12 obtained in this manner are allowed to face each other with a certain gap between them, and a liquid crystal material is enclosed in this gap to produce a liquid crystal panel 5. Thus, picture elements acting for display are formed in parts where transparent electrodes 2 of the upper substrate 12 and those of the lower substrate 11 overlap, and light is completely shielded to eliminate blur of display.
