Corrosion and deposit formation along metallic parts in contact with a boiler water system are inhibited by adding to the water system a water soluble polymer having repeating units (I), pref. in amt. of 0.1-500, esp. 20-500 pts. per million parts aq. medium. (I) is of formula where R1 is 1-6C alkyl; and X is OH or OM, M being a cation. Pref. R1 is CH3 or C6H13. A further cpd. may be added to the aq. medium chosen from: (a) inorganic phosphoric acids and water soluble salts, esp. prim. and sec. phosphoric, ortho-, pyro-, tripoly-, trimeta-, and tetrametaphosphoric acids; (b) phosphonic acids and water soluble salts, esp. ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphonic, methylene diphosphonic, hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic and 2-phosphonobutane -1,2,4-tricarboxylic acids; (c) polyvalent metal salts dissociating to polyvalent metal ions in water, esp. Zn- and Ni chloride or sulphate; and (d) organic phosphoric acid esters and water soluble salts. |
