TiB2 body is made by sintering a powder compact of max. particle size 5 micron consisting of 5-20 wt.% Fe gp. metal (alloy) and balance TiB2, with up to 1.0 wt.% O and up to 2.0 wt.% graphite, to at least 97% density. TiB2 may be replaced by up to 10 wt.% TiC. Pref. material has a TiB2 grain size of 5 micron at less; 0 content is 0.2-1.0 wt.%. Binder metal is an alloy of Fe and 20-50 wt.% Ni; or an alloy of Fe, 5-10 wt.% Ni and 2.5-5 wt.% Co. Sintering is carried out in a vacuum of under 20 micron at 1500-1570 deg. C with a hold of 10-30 mins. As a high-speed cutting tool for Al materials. Material has a hardness of at least 90 Rockwell A and a transverse rupture strength of at least 100,000 psi. |
