PURPOSE:To enable execution of normally optimum control, by a method wherein, when a control signal to control running of an engine is computed in a plurality of steps, in a running region where a change in detection of a running state is slow, a part of a plurality of steps are alternately computed at each processing timing. CONSTITUTION:During running of an engine, in a control unit 5, an alternate deciding plug, adapted to decide whether period measurement or interstroke intake air amount measurement is performed, is turned over at each crank angle interruption routine. The number of revolutions determined from an output from a crank angle sensor 3 is then decided. When the number of revolutions is below a given value, flag decision by an alternate decision flag is passed, and period measurement processing of a crank angle signal is executed. Meanwhile, when exceeding the given value, flag decision by an alternate decision flag is effected, when a flag is 0, measurement of a period between crank angle signals is effected, and when the flag is 1, period measurement is passed. The result of the period measurement is used as information on the number of revolutions of engine.
