PURPOSE:To record/reproduce a still image high in definition by reading from an image pickup element having vertical valid picture elements twice the number of valid scanning lines of a TV for broadcast in four-to-one interlacing in a prescribed order, and sampling in the number of elements half the number of valid horizontal picture elements. CONSTITUTION:The image pickup element 1 whose vertical valid picture element number is twice the number of horizontal valid scanning lines of a TV for broadcast is scanned in four-two-one interlacing, read at the frequency of the horizontal scanning line, one picture is divided into four fields, and thus video signals are outputted. A video signal thus outputted is processed in a processing circuit 2, then sampled by a sample and holding circuit 3 by the sample number of elements half the number of valid horizontal picture elements, and held. For the order of read by interlace, one fourth of the whole scanning lines is read as jumping the remaining three scanning lines in the first field, the middle one of said three scanning lines is read in the second field, a scanning line between the second and the third-field scanning lines is read in the third field, and the remaining scanning lines are read in the fourth field. An output signal from the circuit 3 undergoes an LPF 4, added with a synchronizing 5a, then recorded in a recording part 6, and said signal is reproduced through a reproduction part 7.
