PURPOSE:To permit gradation display by voltage control by using an oriented film varied partially in the angle of a rubbing direction and the number of rubbing to form the oriented film on one side of the upper and lower oriented films corresponding to one picture element constituted between transparent electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The transparent electrodes 12, 15 consisting of transparent ITO layers are formed on glass substrates 11, 14 in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the figure and the oriented films 13, 16 consisting of PVA are formed thereon. The oriented films in the regions 13A, 16A trisecting the size lof the oriented films 13, 16 disposed oppositely to each other are subjected to the rubbing treatment in which revolving rollers are moved from the end to the end of the glass substrates 10 times in an arrow A direction; further, the oriented films are subjected to the rubbing treatment twice along the direction B which is 45 deg. with the arrow A direction. The gentle voltage-transmittance characteristic as the entire part of the picture element is obtd. if the oriented films formed partially with the rubbing treatment in such a manner are formed. The gradation display of the picture elements by voltage control is thus permitted. |
