PURPOSE:To take an accurate measurement by correcting the measurement result of a center line position according to the quantity of flotation of a body to be measured from a specific reference surface and finding the correspondence relation between two center line tracks according to the passage time between measurement positions. CONSTITUTION:First and second CCD linear arrays 21 are arranged at a specific interval L along a steel plate 10 which is conveyed as shown by an arrow A. While the steel plate 10 is conveyed, the center line (f) of the steel plate 10 and the quantities ha and hb of flotation from the specific reference surface are measured by using the array 21. Further, the time required for the steel plate 10 to pass between the interval L is measured by using a timer 15. A microcomputer 14, on the other hand, correct the center line position of the steel plate 10 obtained as a result of said measurement with the quantities of flotation respectively to find the 1st and 2nd center line tracks. The correspondence relation between said 1st and 2nd center line tracks is found according to a difference in said required time. The cumulative quantity of the lateral sliding of the steel plate 10 is found according to the correspondence relation and the 1st center line track is corrected with the quantity of the lateral sliding.
