A method for heat treatment, in particular evaporation, of solutions or suspensions of temperature-sensitive substances, in which the solution is distributed over the surface of carrier members, the heat treatment is carried out under vacuum, and the substances are removed from the carrier members after heat treatment, is carried out at a temperature which is well-defined in advance and lies at a level below the temperature at which the heat-sensitive substance is damaged or deteriorates, at the same time as the method is economical in terms of energy and clean, as use is made of hollow carrier members which contain a substance which undergoes phase change at a temperature which is lower than the level at which the temperature- sensitive substance is damaged or deteriorates. In this way, it is possible to use the energy which is released at a well-defined temperature during hardening for heat treatment of the temperature-sensitive substances on the surface of the carrier members. This method can be used, for example, for evaporation of pigs' blood for producing blood meal. In this method, the substance in the hollow carrier members can be a salt hydrate which has a melting point of 32 degree C which is the approximate temperature to which pigs' blood may be exposed in order that the proteins are not denatured. <IMAGE>
