PURPOSE:To prevent paper jam in a fixing device by detecting the toner sticking to the front end of copying paper and stopping conveyance of the copying paper and copying process prior to fixing. CONSTITUTION:The copying paper 225 is separated from a fixing roller 221a by pawls 222a-222c in the fixing device 22. The copying paper fails to be separated if the toner sticks to the positions A, B, C where the pawls 222a-222c contact the front end of the copying paper. The copying paper is separated by the pawls 222a-222c when the toner sticks to the other positions. The toner sticking to the points A-C at the front end of the copying paper is, therefore, detected by a sensor 23, then the conveyance of the copying paper and the copying process are stopped before the copying paper is conveyed into the fixing device 22. The paper jam in the fixing device 22 is thus prevented.
