A portable tool for crimping sheet metal edges comprises a hand held holder, a hammer pivotally mounted on the holder, support means on the holder for supporting a part between the hammer and the support while the part is being crimped, the support means having a surface contoured to correspond with the part to be crimped, the hammer when pivoted coacting with the support to crimp the part, and guide means for contacting the edge of the part to be crimped being located on the holder between the hammer and the support means. The tool comprises a handle 16 which has secured to it a platform 20, from which project two spaced lugs 34. A pin 36 is locked in bores in the lugs by screws 40 and pivotally supports a lever 14. One end 42 of the lever is the work engaging portion and the other end has a shallow groove 51 which receives the end of a push-rod 28 which passes through the handle, and has an enlarged end 30 by which it is connected to an air-operated hammer. The lever is biased to the position shown in Fig. 1, by a torsion spring 50. An anvil 58 which may be flat, or curved to suit the work, has a spigot 60 which is received in a bore 61 in the platform and held by a spring-loaded ball 62. The workpiece is the outer panel of a car door, which is to be turned over the edge of the inner panel. The end 41e of the workpiece is bent over by movement of the lever 14 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1 and the tool moved along the edge of the panel to bend successive portions of the seam. The edge of the panel abuts the vertical surfaces of the lugs 34 to guide the tool. The anvil 58 may be metal or a high impact plastics, e.g. polyurethane rubber. |
