PURPOSE:To provide a catalyst device with uniformly thin-walled catalyst layer by forming a precoat layer such as alumina or the like preliminarily on the surface of a porous carrier, which is coated with a catalyst layer composed of precious metal powder kneaded paste, and calcining it. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of a porous carrier 1 such as cordierite, a precoating layer 2 such as alumina or the like not including precious metals is formed to alleviate uneven faces on the surface of the carrier. Then, on said precoating layer 2, a paste of layer 3 composed of precious metal powder such as platinum, rhodium or the like kneaded with colloidal alumina is spread thinly in uniform thickness. Then, a catalyst structure is formed by calcining. Said catalyst with a thick-walled catalyst layer can save the use of precious metal, and the surface density of the catalyst metal can be increased to enhance purifying performance. |
